The Ministry of Small Things

What makes a small thing a ministry?

A mother makes a lunch for her son. Such a small thing. It is only a small lunch for one young boy. Her son. She probably does this every day. It is a small task, and it is ministry. She is meeting a need. She is serving another. “…take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it.” (Col. 4:17)

A different kind of day

Then, one day—a day like any other day—yet different, that small lunch (5 barley loaves & 2 fish) fed thousands of people! The mother’s ministry became part of something bigger than herself. Bigger than she ever could have imagined! But isn’t that just like God?!

We often have no idea the impact we have

Jesus took the small lunch, raised it up to God in thanksgiving and it became the sustenance for thousands of people. The ministry of small things. Do you think the mother had any idea that morning that the lunch she made her son would be used on such a grand scale for so many? I doubt if she had any idea she was also making lunch for Jesus that morning! Do you think her son thought he would go hungry when they took his lunch away?

Giving thanks can change things

Jesus was handed the little lunch. He then honored God as the true Source by giving Him thanks. “Jesus therefore took the loaves and having given thanks, He distributed to those who were seated, likewise also of the fish as much as they wanted.” (John 9:11) I believe that giving of thanks is what opened up the Heavens so to speak. In this case, it was the story of the loaves and fishes you know so well. (John 6:9ff) But it is also the same for you. Giving of thanks can open up the Heavens as you seek to do ministry. And when you feel like what you have to offer is too little! It is NEVER too little! It is always just what is needed for whatever He is calling you to do.

Going about your day-to-day

The mother had probably made that lunch hundreds of times with no real impact except to serve her son and be certain he was fed and cared for. You—like her—don’t know when THIS will be the day when your little will be turned into much with the touch of the Master’s hand.

Don’t be like the disciples

They scoffed. They could only see the need. They could only see their inability to meet the need. They only saw the cost. They still did not understand that The Lord is The Provider. “There is a lad here, who has 5 barley loaves, and two fish, but what are these for so many people?” (John 6:9)

Jesus saw the possibilities!

Jesus—the Master of small things. He knew. He cared. He met not just physical needs, but also heartfelt emotional and spiritual needs.Yes, he healed and yes, he raised the dead, and yes, he even walked on water to get to the terrified disciples in the boat hit by a storm in the middle of the lake. He KNEW! He intimately knew the Father, and He did the Father’s will. And He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. What He did then, He does now! Now, He does it through you. Through me. It can take the form of a smile. A note. A phone call. A lunch taken to a shut-in. Praying for a sick friend. Befriending an ornery millennial. Taking a child to the park for the day so the mom can have a break. Giving a gift for no reason. Just because. Speaking blessing over the check out person. Praying for the persecuted church. Sharing the Gospel message. Starting a Bible Study in your apartment building. We may never know the impact our small thing has.

Just one skilled electrical worker

Like the man in the picture. Just look at that tangle of wires. Yet, he is willing to do what is required in order to bless you. Who even thinks about him on any given day? Yet, there he is in the background, stringing wires all day every day. Routine. You may never think to thank him about what he does to make your life better. Until a storm comes. And the wires go down. Suddenly, his routine work becomes a very special ministry to the rest of us. The ministry of small things matters. In lives. In homes. Hospitals. Offices. One willing person can fix it in moments. Like the disciples. Like the Mom that made the lunch. Like the skilled electrical worker. Like JESUS! You, too, have a ministry of small things to do…

Marching orders

”…take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it.” (Col. 4:17) Be available. Do the work of the ministry of small things for His glory and your joy. For there is no greater joy than to serve Him with all your heart, soul, mind and strength! “Now to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think…to Him be the Glory…forever and ever.” (Ephesians 3:20, 21)

I Confess. I Am a Fanatic. Join Me?

Pam Taylor

Definition of a fanatic

“A person filled with excessive and single-minded zeal, especially for an extreme or political cause.” All of you who know me well, know it is true. When I believe something, I am immovable. BECAUSE I have done my own personal and detailed research! And I don’t quit until I am satisfied that I have thoroughly investigated. So…

I confess. I am absolutely a fanatic

I have been a Leading From Your Strengths “fanatic” for about ten years. I was first introduced to it by Rodney Cox, CEO of Ministry Insights, International. About ten years ago, Rodney gave a “guest” presentation in one of my Coaching classes. I took the assessment, feeling a bit smug, thinking that it would NOT be able to “peg” me, because I kept second guessing & changing my answers as I took the assessment. Nope. I was certain. I would be the exception. They would NOT be able to be put me into a neat little box.

However, I was NOT the exception

I was convinced immediately after my virtual consultation by Rodney (in front of all my classmates and my instructor, by the way) that this was a GIFT to the church. To Christians. To SHOW us how to BE the church. How to encourage one another to love and good deeds. All the things that Scripture instructs us to become TOGETHER. So, I immediately signed up for the training to be a LFYS Consultant. (I took it again, wanting to be the best Strengths Coach I could be. And I became even more convinced that I had a key to help the people of the “church” learn better how to BE the church. To date, I have found nothing better.)

Now, I laugh at my doubting

When I saw my 20 page print out, I was stunned. It was ME!!! Most of my life, NO ONE has understood me. Certainly, no one has said to me that I my personality was chosen by God. But that is exactly what I learned. I know I can get on people’s nerves. I have too many questions while trying to understand new stuff that people/bosses/family present to me. That can be MISunderstood as wanting my own way, but I discovered, that my questions are because I am actually wanting enough information that I can be on board, in agreement. I always wondered why I was so intense and why couldn’t I just relax and let stuff roll off my back? “What was WRONG with me? WHY couldn’t I be like EVERYBODY ELSE?” (Probably because NO ONE is like EVERYBODY else! My expectation was unrealistic. AND self-centered.)

The many other options

Yes, there are many other options. And over the years, I have also taken those assessments, like the DISC, Myers-Briggs, and others based on colors, nature, and all sorts of different things. And the main reason for this particular article is the latest SHINY OBJECT that CHRISTIANS are running with. EVERYWHERE, the ENNEAGRAM is the latest MUST DO assessment.

Something about the Enneagram concerned me

So, after these 10 years of understanding that feeling of “concern” is part of why God put me in the body of Christ. To ask people to slow down a bit and be sure we understand what we are getting into before we go full speed ahead with the latest shiny object. Being a Beaver (LFYS) personality, I don’t automatically trust something, just because others say it is OK. God actually commended the Bereans for investigating what they were taught, recognizing counterfeits by comparing it with the original (The Bible). And, we must always remember to consider how our choices may not be “sin” but, they may cause our “weaker” or less Berean-like brothers and sisters to stumble and maybe even fall (Romans 14:14-23). .

Unable to just let it go,

I did some Enneagram investigating on my own. A Beaver personality actually NEEDS to understand—not to argue or disagree—but hoping to be able to be a TEAM player and get enough information to feel comfortable with what everyone else is excited about. I needed to know why in my gut I had concerns. I hoped I was wrong. Sadly, I discovered a form of gnostic based numerology with occultist origins, given in a vision by what sounded a lot like a demon. I was put off by the evil and dark origins. The more I investigated,  the more I knew I had to say something on my “platform” that God has given me. Sadly, some say since it is called “Christian Enneagram” that it is OK. You know, like horoscopes, or palm reading. Or like “Christian Yoga”. (If it is Christian, why do we call it Yoga?) Adding the word Christian and adding Bible verses onto something does not automatically make it Biblical. (See links to the right for more info re Ennneagram origins).

Why I stay with Leading From Your Strengths

From what I have witnessed, none have so honored the Word of God and our Creator, like Ministry Insights Leading From Your Strengths (LFYS) does. For me, that is the main reason for 10 years, it is the only Personality Assessment Tool I have kept in my Coaching Toolbox.

Another coach posted on Twitter—referring to Ministry Insight International’s Leading From Your Strengths—“The key is your identity in Christ. LFYS emphasizes this point.” She is so right. That is the key!

Excellent life-changing results

God, the Scriptures, loving & accepting others—all Biblical principles—added to the base of discovering our Identity in Christ.

It’s like when a law enforcement officer is trained to recognize a counterfeit bill by studying the original. He learns everything else is counterfeit. Easy peasy! That’s kinda how I feel about LFYS. In another blog post, I wrote to explain in more detail WHY I feel so strongly about sticking with what works for me and for my clients. I have personally witnessed many lives totally transformed through this amazing tool. Mine, included! Here’s more of my testimony: “Which Personality Assessment Tool is the Best?

Have you ever noticed…

Why do you seem to be one person at work and another person at home? Ask yourself: Why are you more intense in some situations? What are others’ perceptions of you under stress? What does your health and finances have to do with your personality? All these questions are answered in the consultation. A trained coach will help you apply it to every part of your life…work, family, play, physical, mental, financial, etc. To become all God intended. Resulting in being Joy-filled.

We fool ourselves

We think we know ourselves. But unless the Lord God is the center of our growth, self-deception can get in the way of our maturity in Christ. It is really important to walk through this personality type journey with a coach who has been trained in the process. I know I have repeated that often. It is crucial! Often we just take ANOTHER assessment and read the results with interest; and then just put it on the shelf. And soon, we forget about it entirely.

Take the LFYS assessment, print out the profile, but don’t stop there. Contact me to set up a consultation. You will be delighted and amazed at the freedom you will experience afterwards. It is the consultation with a LFYS trained coach, helping you with the application of it that makes it like GOLD. Of great value to your life and relationships.

You will discover and embrace all God intended you to be when He created you.

Hard Lessons in God’s Faithfulness

“Now then, go, and I, even I, will be with our mouth, and teach you what you are to say.” – Exodus 4:12 (NASB)

Spanish Language School

While in language school in Costa Rica, I struggled over basic grammar rules, the meanings of words and the tenses of the verbs. I often felt frustrated. Like Moses, I reminded God that I was slow of speech. I knew He wanted me to go out and speak anyway, even though I was afraid. There are no good excuses when He says “go”. And of course, He was faithful through it all.

WHERE do You want us to go?

Another time, after Spanish language school, the mission group sent us to Haiti, where they speak French and Creole. I felt like I could have written the book about When God Doesn’t Make Sense. I struggled with everything. I was unprepared for the culture and I again struggled over basic grammar and word meanings and tenses of verbs. I most definitely felt frustrated and actually I felt betrayed by the mission group. But once again, God’s faithfulness was evident, as He once more reminded me that it was He who told me to go; and that He would teach me what to say.

Communication is more than just words

I learned that when I smiled a lot and used my hands a lot I was able to find ways to communicate with the people of the countries where we were sent. I’m grateful that I did not let my fear win the battle. It was actually hard to leave both countries because God had been so evident in my daily survival there; and He taught me what to say, just like He promised.

Inadequacy is a condition, not a place

Just because I am no longer in a foreign country doesn’t mean that the days have ended for my stepping out and “going” when I feel inadequate for the task. He reminds us that it is the very definition of the Christian life. His sufficiency in exchange for our insufficiency. Every day. All day. No matter what. No matter where. No matter who. No matter when. He is our “How”. Always.

Let’s pray together:

“Where do you want us to go today, Lord? Thank You for the examples of Your proven faithfulness in Your Word. Help us to remember times past when you were faithful, so we have courage for today to trust You to be faithful again. Always. Thank You for the testimony of other believers. It gives us courage. May we bring You joy this day. Amen.”

Back to School Days – 17 Ways to Keep Your Sanity

It’s that Back-To-School time of year.

Back to scheduled days. Scheduled bed times. Scheduled meals. Back to busy days. To car pooling the kids to sports and fun events.

What is a Mom to do in order to keep her sanity?

What can you do to keep the home a safe place for everyone? A place where they want to bring their friends. I can still remember when September came around, the whole world of lazy hazy days of summer came to an abrupt end. So, whether you are a single parent, a homeschool parent, or if your kids are in public or private school, I’ve been pondering today what might be helpful for you right now.

Start each day smart.

With the Lord, no matter what else is going on. Each morning, turn your face toward Heaven and start confessing who the Lord is. Name His qualities. (Shepherd. Healer. Protector. Provider.) Name His titles. (Lord. Savior. King. Creator. Father. Friend.) Praise Him for His attributes. Behold Him and Believe. Believe He will meet your every NEED. EVERY DAY! Share what you are learning with the kids! And don’t forget: Get in the Word as soon as you can each day.

Now, for the day-to-day back-to-school stuff. Here are a few ideas…

  1. Figure out what is working.
  2. Do more of it. Stop doing what’s not working.
  3. Start with 5 minute wake-up snuggles in bed. Prayer. Bible verse. Then, a good nutritious breakfast. No less than 10 grams of protein for each of you.
  4. Send them off with kisses on the palm of their hands. If they miss you during the day, they can put their hand against their face to be reminded of your love.
  5. Send them off with fun little sayings like: I love you. You love me. Have a great day and I’ll see you at three.
  6. Send a family picture along in their lunch pail. Laminate it after you glue it to a red construction paper heart.
  7. Keep adjusting the model. Stay focused on the vision of your individual family plan. That plan will be different than any other family you know!
  8. Don’t take anything or anyone for granted.
  9. A calm household has regular routine bedtimes. For kids and for Mom. Well rested people get along with each other better than tired people.
  10. Never get “comfortable” with what you do.
  11. Keep learning. Keep fresh. Be teachable.
  12. Find your own “voice”. Be willing to be unique. Don’t “follow the crowd”. Follow your Lord and ask Him for His plan.
  13. Trust the process.
  14. Don’t get impatient with the process. An oak tree started as a tiny acorn.
  15. Ask for help when you need it.
  16. HAVE YOUR OWN COACH THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE PROCESS. Everybody needs their own “cheerleader” (coach).
  17. Discover your strengths. May I suggest Leading From Your Strengths assessments? I promise that it will give you fresh heart. You will discover a new understanding of yourself and each family member. Recognizing, understanding, and embracing each others’ strengths is a VERY GOOD plan! Contact me for more information. (It is so much better than trying to change each other, which NEVER works anyway. ).

And over all these things, spread a covering of prayer to the One who believes in you. Choose to trust that He truly wants to help you be successful this school year. Just ask. He has the “gift” of “helps”, btw

God bless you bunches!
