Law vs Grace

Stairway

Two Husbands

I once heard a story that helped me understand the difference between OT law and NT grace. Here it is…

There once was a woman married to a harsh task master of a husband. He made her a long list of what he expected her to accomplish. She found it impossible to complete and always felt lacking and a bit frightened of his reaction. She never felt good enough. She daily felt like a failure. She had no relationship with him. And, she was very afraid of him.

One day, her husband died and she put the list away in a drawer and forgot all about it.

She later met another man. He was a wonderful, kind, thoughtful, soft-spoken, loving man. She married him. They had a wonderful relationship, based on mutual respect.

As she was cleaning out that old desk one day, she found the list and when she read it—much to her surprise—she was automatically doing all the things on the list for her current husband. Without even trying. It was so easy to bless and serve him.

Comparison

That was an illustration I heard many years ago to compare the inability to keep the Old Testament laws. Always attempting to please & appease God. It was never enough. There were so many rules!!!

THEN, along came Jesus, who became our sin and died in our place, opening the gates of Heaven to all who choose to believe and accept the marvelous gift of forgiveness God offers us through His Son, Jesus. He is wonderful! We no longer fear we are not good enough and we can choose to live in the joy and pleasure of His company NOW, under grace. The Lamb of God, Jesus the Christ, our Savior,

“God of unconquerable Love, each day you surround me with Your unfailing Love. Today, I am going to remember that!”

It’s a good thing to give thanks to the Lord for His boundless Love!

What Do a Fleece And a Parking Space Have In Common?

Full Parkng Lot

Parking spaces

New Christians pray for parking spaces close to the door, and almost always, God gives it to them. Why?

Gideon’s Fleece

These new Christians, like Gideon in his new walk with God, are also asking for confirmation and needing ADDED confirmation through the “fleece test”. God patiently and kindly gave him affirmation, as He gives it to them.

Faith walk

“There are degrees of faith. At one stage of the Christian experience, we cannot believe unless we have some sign or great manifestation of feeling. Like Gideon, we feel our fleece; if wet, we are willing to trust God. This may be true faith, yet imperfect. It always looks for feeling or some token besides the Word of God.” – G. H. P. –From Streams in the Desert devotional, p. 229-230)

3 Phases of faith

  1. Believes when there are favorable conditions.
  2. Believes when there is the absence of feeling.
  3. Believes God and His Word when circumstances, emotions, appearances, people, human reason all urge to the contrary.

Back to the parking space analogy

A new Christian always gets the parking space near the door when she/he prays.

A mature Christian prays for a space near the door and God says, “NO, you need the exercise. I love you too much to grant your request.”

Which one are you?

Life Is Like an Elevator

Elevator Display

“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.”

I Thessalonians 5:11

This world is not our home. We are merely passing through. It is a journey. To encourage one another is to give courage where it is needed. The Christian life requires moral courage. That’s where we come in. Encouragement can come through prayer or in speaking the truth in love, and through blessing others with words and deeds.

Life is like an elevator

When you are in an elevator and another person gets on, you say, “What floor?” If they tell you “2”, you know they want to get off on the 2nd floor. You know their destination and you know how they are going to get there. What if you don’t pay attention or you think they should get off on 4 (the 4th floor), so you push 4? You will have done them a dis-service. You are not the elevator operator. You merely pushed the buttons. But you have affected their lives one way or the other. Either for good or not.

Life is like a spiritual elevator

The same thing happens when you try to push someone to a level in their spiritual life before they are ready. They may do all the right things but their heart is not ready and they fall down. They will get discouraged. Some quit and fall away. Only the Lord knows when they are ready for the next “level” of their walk with Him.

“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”

Ephesians 4:29

What are we to do?

  • Discernment and encouragement are needed
  • Encourage—give courage—to the fainthearted in each step they take toward maturity
  • Look for ways to bless those who are floundering
  • Discern what they are saying BEHIND the actual words
  • Pray for them and with them
  • TRUST that GOD is guiding them. YOUR job is to encourage and to bless and walk alongside with your “atta boys” ringing in their ears

GOD is the ELEVATOR OPERATOR

You are merely along for the ride in each person’s journey to their DESTINATION. TRUST them to take the right floor. GOD will take them there. Sometimes we just need to get out of the way.

Until next time…

The Secret

Door into a Garden

I have been set aside these last few weeks. I thought I’d share with you a bit of what God has been impressing on me.

Elisabeth Elliot

“The secret is Christ in me, not me in a different set of circumstances.”

Change for change sake is not the answer. The secret is believing. Trusting that God means what He says. He is with us and within us always.

John Piper

”God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.”

God created our hearts with a thirst that can only be satisfied in Him.

Psalm 63:1

“O God, Thou art my God. I shall seek Thee earnestly. My soul thirsts for Thee. My flesh yearns for Thee, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”

The Psalmist reminds us that our entire being literally longs for God and no matter what else we seek to fill that void, that God-sized vacuum in each of us can only be satisfied when He is truly our first love. When we earnestly seek Him above all others.

Hudson Taylor describes “The Secret”

“It is the exchanged life…. No longer I…” No thought of imitating Christ. Rather, “It was in the blessed reality: ‘Christ liveth in me’…

“No longer bondage, but liberty. Instead of failure, quiet victories within; instead of fear and weakness, a restful sense of sufficiency in ANOTHER.

Encouragement

I Thessalonians 5:24

“Faithful is He who calls you and He also will bring it to pass.” He promises! He keeps His promises.

1 Thessalonians 5:28

”The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.”

Wedding Plans and Alpha Moms. Finding Joy in the Journey.

Wedding party tug of war

Most couples have expectations that after the engagement, there comes the blissful and effortless planning of a wedding celebration. However, sometimes, one or more Alpha Moms vie against the Alpha Bride for the power to plan.

Let’s be fair. Seldom does the Alpha person see the relational fractures they are causing. What could be some of the possible reasons this is happening?

Alpha Manifestations

  1. The money rules. Whoever pays the most thinks (and rightly so) that they should have a greater input … but unfortunately that often translates into the “Right to Rule” all things attitude.
  2. Power struggles. “Where, what, who, when” decisions become nightmares as formerly sane people try to be heard. It appears that they feel that their way is the only reasonable (translated: correct) decision.
  3. Focus on tasks/decisions. It is easy to forget to be kind when so many tasks and decisions are piling up.
  4. Past experiences. Perhaps their own Mom was a Wedding Alpha Mom and they don’t know there is another option.

Is there an alternative? Is this all inevitable? Does the best Alpha win?

Advantages in the Christian Wedding

We can choose to keep God in the center…to pray first, pray during, and pray after each decision, each meeting, and each event.

  1. The wisdom of the Word of God is the Rock to stand on. Reading the New Testament book of Philippians is a good place to start each day. It helps to keep our focus on the Joy in the Lord…to keep our thoughts of Him front and center.
  2. It helps to keep reminding ourselves that God is on our side. He wants us to ask for His help. He desires the wedding plans to be as blissful as the joy of the engagement was. Jesus’ first recorded miracle was at a wedding feast with his mother. He understands.
  3. A priority must be in keeping our guard up against the evil one that desires to destroy the good testimony that can come from a Christian wedding done well.
  4. We can choose to have an “accountability partner” to help us keep focused on what is eternal.

It is also important to remember that just because we are Christians, we are not immune to the temptations brought on by wanting everything to be just right. With all the busyness, it is easy to forget we are sinners needing God’s mercy, guidance, wisdom, and grace.

In Luke 18:9-14

The Alpha church leader – the one that knew and taught the Scripture – the one that spent most of his days in a religious lifestyle (and should have known better) tried to convince God of his “Alpha-ness” (translated: worthiness).

In the story, we also see the contrast of the lowly, despised man – feeling his sinfulness (translated: UNworthiness). He is begging God for mercy.

The question is

In any of life’s circumstances – do we want to be the Alpha person or the one asking for the Lord’s mercy and guidance…and receiving it because God sees our heart. Being an Alpha person is a hard habit to break. But the first step is awareness that it’s not worth the ultimate price of being out of God’s favor.

Perspective

It helps to keep the perspective that it is truly only one day. Future relationships can be strained when we insist that the Alpha way is the right way…controlling things with either attitude, tears, or outbursts of anger. Whether you are the bride, the groom, the mother, the father, a relative, or friend, it simply is not worth it in the long run. How much better to seek to be a blessing in the planning of a wedding.

Decisions

Yes, decisions have to be made and deadlines have to be met. And yielding is difficult, but done with eyes wide open and on the Lord, it can be the difference between being a Kingdom Person rather than a Church Person. Our ways are earthly. His ways are Heavenly.

Luke 18:14 “I tell you that this man {the UNworthy one…the one who knew that he was a sinner}, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled; and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

For His glory!

If you are now or soon to be involved in the planning of a wedding, I pray for God to bless your wedding plans, your wedding, and all the rest of your days on earth. I’d love to help you through the process. Let’s talk…

Exactly HOW Do You Give Glory to God?

Do all to the glory of God

How Do We Give Glory to God?

It is such an unnatural phrase on the surface: Give Glory to God. We are not accustomed to giving glory to anyone. We naturally take the credit for ourselves. We even seek that attention and admiration. We talk about needing to feel appreciated. Humans like to receive fame and acknowledgment for what they have accomplished. Exactly who are YOU trying to please?

Many have trouble letting go of the past.

Grumbling against one another can become commonplace. And worse—grumbling against God—can rob people of the followship that God intended for them. Wishing things had been different. Thinking they deserved better than what they got. The only problem is, their PAST is sucking the life and joy out of their PRESENT. I know that I, too, have gone through seasons of wallowing in self-pity. And I can attest to the fact that it literally made me physically ill. It can even rob a person of the ability to get restful sleep. Gratitude is most definitely a more freeing and healthier option. And is most definitely how we give Glory to God.

Toby Mac quote:

The sooner you let go of what happened or what they did, the quicker you can embrace what God is doing.

I’m sure no Bible Scholar.

My favorite phrase is out of the story when the elite were trying to trip up the blind man who had received his sight after Jesus healed him. They wanted him to explain what happened. The thing is with God, and with Jesus, and with the Holy Spirit…They are beyond intellectual explanation. They just ARE! So, like the blind man, when I get stumped about something too large in Scripture for me to understand or explain, my favorite phrase is: “I don’t know. All I know is once I was blind and now I see.” That’s me. For years, I had searched and searched for what I saw that some people—including my mother–had. But it was elusive.

But when the time was right…

And when I was at the end of myself and my own attempts at problem-solving were fruitless; then suddenly, I GOT it!

I suddenly understood.

My blindness had been healed and now I see. I put my hand to the plow and have not looked back. I adore my Savior and Lord and am so very grateful for all He has helped me through.

There are no deeper meanings in what I share

My faith is simple. I have not gone to Bible college. I HAVE read through the Bible several times, devotionally, and I love to study the word. I probably frustrate scholarly students of the Bible because, all I have is a simple but experiential understanding of the Gospel. If God said it, I want to read it in context and then I want to ask Him what He wants me to do about it in my own life. (Sometimes, I have to admit, I wish I had not asked, because God always answers, and it might be uncomfortable obeying Him ) I am so grateful He has not and will never ever fail or forsake me (Hebrews 13:5b)

Whenever I speak of Him or share His Word

My hope is to make the Bible come alive in a fresh way for you, so you will want to know Jesus more deeply than you already do, as a result of our spending time together here in the Blog-isphere. The consistent message throughout the Word is: “For God so loved…that He gave…” That is His message throughout His entire “BOOK” (The Bible). And that is what He calls us to!

John 14:12

“The truth is anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works because I am going to be with the Father.”

Let’s look at that verse more personally:

  1. You must believe in Jesus as the Son of God (Believing in Jesus and asking for things IN HIS NAME, means that you must believe everything about Him. That He was born of a virgin, died on a cross, was resurrected from the dead, is currently in Heaven, and that He will come again to take you back to the place He has prepared for you. Heaven is your REAL home. This is just a temporary place, to get the “bugs” worked out of us so to speak, while we wait.) You can see how much is packed into the word: B E L I E V E
  2. Since Jesus is right now interceding for us in Heaven, and has sent the Holy Spirit to live permanently in you, then you can do whatever He did (works) that bring Glory to God, as Jesus did. When we ask, in His Name, then we KNOW that He answers, bringing Glory to the Father God.
  3. So you see that any GOOD you do is actually the Son of God – in the form of the Holy Spirit — doing it in and through you. So, your good works are actually HIS good works through you, because He is interceding for you in Heaven with the Father; so that we cannot and should not take any credit for any of it.

John 14:13-14

You can ask for anything in my Name, and I will do it, because the work of the Son brings Glory to the Father. Yes, ask anything in My Name and I will do it!”

What does it mean that the Father is glorified?

The key / the PURPOSE / the WHY of all that we ask and all that He answers, is that the Father be Glorified. Why do we care? Because, those are the prayers that get answered.

So, to stay in the mindset of Glorifying God, we must be asking ourselves, who is the center of whatever is happening, or being said, or what we want to happen, or even in our thoughts? If it is OURSELVES, then it is most definitely NOT giving Glory to God. And so, it cannot be in Jesus’ Name.

We live in a ME-ism world.

The world centers around me. My hurts. My needs. My desires. My ideas. What *I* want. That is most definitely NOT giving Glory to God. God is not a “genie’ in a bottle. His “job” is NOT to keep me or you happy. He is not “santa claus” where you hope that you had more good things you did than bad things you did, so you can get what you asked for. Apart from Jesus, all we know how to do is sin and be self-centered.

The Sinner, apart from Grace, is unable to be willing, and unwilling to be able. — W. E. Best

If He made all things (and He did)

And if all things exist and have their being because of, by Him, and through Him (and they do), then–no matter what–the best plan of all is to CHOOSE GRATITUDE! Look for things for which you can be grateful. All day long. You might want to start a gratitude daily JOURNAL.

You will find whatever you are looking for. And you will find whatever you Crave. Crave joy and gratitude and you will find it. AND you will bring glory to God! Guaranteed!!!

How can I pray for you?

I’d love to hear from you.

Walk. Sink. Cry Out. Reach Out. Grab Ahold.

Jesus and the Disciples in a Storm

Wow! I’ve been resting on Matthew 14:16 the last few days. For days I couldn’t seem to get past this single verse: “But Jesus said to them, ‘They do not need to go away. YOU give them something to eat.” (emphasis mine)

Confusion

What was I supposed to glean from that verse that would be applicable to my life now. My “nest” has been ruffled up. My comfort zone is not “comfortable” right now. What do I have to offer…to GIVE…Feeling off-center and a bit like I was sinking.

What Do I Have to Offer?

Meditating on this single verse has been a lifeline…pointing me to clarity of purpose once again.

There were leftovers

This verse is part of the story of the 5 loaves, 2 fish. AND of the 12 baskets full left over. (After feeding 5,000 + people!)

The disciples were frustrated with all the people that would need something to eat. Unfortunately, there was no fast food restaurant nearby. They were concerned. So, they went to Jesus to tell Him the problem (because maybe they thought He didn’t realize the problem. 🙂 All they had was a little boy’s lunch. They had their own ideas what needed to be done, but Jesus had a different plan. That is where Matthew 14:16 comes into the picture.)

Blessing and breaking

Jesus had taken the 5 loaves and 2 fish that the disciples had brought him. He then looked up to Heaven, blessed the food and broke it into pieces and gave all of it to the disciples to distribute to the MULTITUDES. (Do you ever wonder what they were thinking right then?? I do! Kinda funny to think about!) So, back to our story…They gave Him what they had. He multiplied it, but THEY had to “give them something to eat.” THEY had to distribute what God had multiplied. (Reminds me of a poem by Annie Johnson Flint “Hands and Feet for Jesus”.)

They ate what had been multiplied and were FILLED. No more hunger. Filled. Filled with what was first given to Jesus and blessed by Him. FILLED…with much more left over than they even started with. Twelve baskets full LEFT OVER!!! (Here’s where I have been stopping to talk to Jesus a minute. Will you join me?)

Thank You, Lord, for the LITTLE I have to offer. Thank You, that when I give it up to You for Your purposes, You will multiple it to meet the need…and sometimes with some left over. You multiple my LITTLE for others’ sake! Not to hoard, but to give out…to the multitude!

Resting and chewing

I seriously have been resting on this story for days! There is so much there to “chew on”. (Sorry…I couldn’t help myself there!)

After the Offering

Then, after all were fed, Jesus sent them all away—even the disciples—and then He went away—alone—to pray.

He prayed MANY hours. It is stunning that He went away alone. He didn’t “work” the crowd. He didn’t seek glory, attention, or honor or praise for all He had done. Rather, He went to talk with His Father…to spend time alone with His Father. He had merely been doing what He was created to do.

They still didn’t “get it”. Nor does Peter, the Otter personality.

Even after the miracle of the loaves and fishes, the disciples still didn’t “get it”…which they prove by their reactions while in the boat, without Jesus,  experiencing a storm with strong wind. Note they all were very fearful. Even Peter. Let’s call this the “Peter walking on the water” story.

Peter was different than the others. You know Peter. He often spoke whatever came to his mind, and often acted impulsively. Peter was an Otter personality type (Leading From Your Strengths).  He liked to be right in the middle of the action. The party doesn’t start until the Otter arrives! They are FUN!

Without thinking it through, Peter couldn’t wait for Jesus to come into the boat with them. He wouldn’t wait! So, he  stepped out of the boat. And, he was actually safe UNTIL he took his eyes off Jesus and onto the stormy seas.

Typically, Otters love adventure, new things, and get excited about every new opportunity.  They don’t have to think about it. OF COURSE NOT! After all, what could go wrong, right? 😉

They want what they want NOW. They don’t like to wait. It is not surprising Peter did not evaluate the options before flinging himself into the middle of the action. So he stepped out of the boat and walked on the water. BUT when he took his eyes off Jesus and onto the turbulent water, he began to sink! And then he cried out for help. Then he reached out his hand to grab ahold of Jesus. And Jesus saved him. He did not drown. And they got in the boat together.

(Otters are wonderful adventurers, but often bite off more than they can chew, and right smack dab in the middle of their adventure, they just might need some assistance. And then, they let you take over because they are on to the next adventure. You can’t keep a good Otter down.)

And now the storm is past and all was well…

UNTIL the next time Peter and friends forget what they have learned from the provision of the loaves and fishes and on the stormy sea…

What Do I Have to Offer?

Are you like me?

I think there’s an obvious reason why God impressed on me to call my business Loaves and Fishes Coaching., so many years ago. I have always loved this story. And that theme of the loaves and fishes is on my mind often:

What do I have to offer? Am I willing? Do I trust GOD to do with it as He sees fit? It is a timeless principle. A theme that I have to keep re-learning. I have to ask myself. Do *I* REALLY “get it”???

What about you?

Do you have to keep re-learning things about Jesus’ trustworthiness that you thought you already knew?

Can you honestly answer the question, “What do I have to offer?”

The Rewards of Training Faithfully

Run Your Race

“In a race everyone runs, but only one person gets first prize. So run your race to win.” ~ 1 Corinthians 9:24 TLB

Marathon-ers are a dedicated bunch

They train faithfully, in all kinds of weather—always with that focused attention to detail that produces winners. Some hire coaches to help them train, stay focused on the goal, and endure to the end. Coaches are encouragers, but sometimes they are tough and tell you what you don’t want to hear, in order to help you be the best you can be, because they believe in your potential.

Marathon running

It can be grueling before, during, and after the event. One friend actually lost a toe as a result of being determined to finish the race. She persevered in spite of the pain. Maybe even because of it. She had worked so hard to get to this point. She simply could not give up! Would not give up!

Water stations

The water stations along the way are an oasis. Along with the refreshment of the water, they are also a place to receive encouragement to persevere from friends, family, and your coach. People cheer the runners on at these refreshment stations. It is critical to be reminded of the goal to finish.

Run Your Race

Isaiah 40:29-31

“He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might, He increases strength…But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength…
They shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”

Time on this earth

As followers of Christ being “earth-bound” can seem like training for a marathon. It is critical to keep focused toward the goal. Like running coaches for the marathon runner, Christian Life Coaches help Christ-followers to hold their focus toward their goals: “Forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead…the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14). Paul also said in that same verse: “…but one thing I do…”

Is that the one thing we do?

Do we earth-bound humans press on with our eye toward the goal of spending eternity with Jesus? Is that our joy and focus? Do we love Him enough to go through what is sometimes the loneliness that accompanies grueling training before, during, and after the event of “going home to be with the Lord”? Are we willing to lose a toe—or worse—in the process? Or are we distracted toward the worldly prizes more than the heavenly ONE? Do we try to take shortcuts because the training is so hard?!

Are You Running Your Race?

Today is a new day!

Let’s keep cheering one another on. This is a great day for a fresh start with a fresh perspective. Which marathon are YOU running? And which prize do you most value?

I’d love to hear from you.

Have you done any marathon running? How have you found it to compare to the walk of a disciple of Christ? Would you like a coach to cheer you on and help you stay focused?
